OLD FORT HOUSE MUSEUM

The
Fort Edward Historical Association was founded in 1925. Its purpose has been
to preserve and showcase the history of Fort Edward and its environs. The organization
started a small museum in the upstairs back room of the Fort Free Library in
the 1920's a group of local businessmen purchased the "Old Fort House"
property and challenged the Historical Association to reactivate itself to take
charge of the property. In 1953 after extensive restoration the Old Fort House
Museum was gifted to the Historical Association for use as a museum. Since that
time the Historical Association has preserved several historic structures and
acquired several major collections of local historical significance. The Museum
is one of the largest of its type in northern New York State. It maintains office
hours year round, its archives are open to the public two days per week or by
appointment. The Museum supports an education program for all ages. The Museum
campus of historic structures is open May to October and December as well as
other times by appointment. In 1998 the Fort Edward Art Center merged with the
historical association. The Art Center building will still be used for exhibition
of artistic works and the annual senior high school art competition will continue
to be held.
