Town and Village Hall

A Town Board of four members plus a Supervisor govern the Town.
A Village Board of four members plus a Mayor govern the Village.
Both municipalities have zoning and subdivision regulations and require building permits. Each municipality has a justice court with a shared court clerk. Court meets weekly.

The Town provides curbside trash removal in the Town and the Village.
Trash stickers can be purchased at the Town Clerk's office. The Town and the Village provide recycling services on the same day as trash pickup.

TOWN BOARD MEETINGS

Citizen participation is welcome at all Board meetings. At each regular meeting, time is reserved for those who may wish to address the Board on any matter. Time reserved for audience participation is after consideration ahs been given to all agenda items. This period is referred to on the agenda under Public Comments.
The Public Hearing procedure provides for comments from the public regarding a specific issue to be heard prior to the Board's consideration of that issue. Any person desiring to address the Board, should rise and be recognized by the Chair, and clearly state their name and address for the record, before proceeding with comments, which are always welcome.

Zoning and sub-division regulations are administered through Town and Village are administered through Town and Village Planning Boards and Zoning Board of Appeal.


HERITAGE DAYS
Fort Edward Heritage Days Summer Celebration is a three-day event usually held on the weekend following the Fourth of July weekend. There will be musical entertainment and a number of community events taking place at the Underwood Park, the Yacht Basin and throughout the Village.

A joint town/village Heritage Days Committee has organized to conduct this cultural, economic and community benefit event.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Fort Edward Chamber of Commerce sponsors a "Christmas Lights & Cookie Delights".

With the assistance of the Fort Edward Fire Department, Santa arrives by fire engine and then the fun moves to the firehouse for all to share.

 

FORT EDWARD LION'S CLUB
The Fort Edward Lions Club has served our community for 60 years. It is one of the largest charitable "service" organizations in the Town.

The Club sponsors the performance of the Adirondack Drums and the drum corps competition. To become a member or to get tickets for the drum corps competition call 747-4342.

 

HEALTH
The Glens Falls Hospital is less than twenty minutes away, and Saratoga Hospital is within a half-hour away. Glens Falls Hospital offers a lab for blood and specimen collection at the Fort Hudson Health Services Building on Upper Broadway. In addition there are several doctors and dentists located within the Town. Pharmacies include the Fort Edward Pharmacy in the Village and a pharmacy in the Grand Union Store in the Town.

TRANSPORTATION

Fort Edward is located on Route 4, the main corridor from Interstate 87 to Vermont. Interstate 87 is located only four miles from the center of Fort Edward via Exit 17.
Amtrak rail lines travel through the village of Fort Edward. The Local Development Corporation is in the process of restoring the Fort Edward Train Station for passenger use. Two southbound and two northbound trains make daily stops in Fort Edward.

The Greater Glens Falls Transit Systems operates bus service from Fort Edward to Glens Falls with local stops between. In Glens Falls transfers are available to the malls, Adirondack Community College and Lake George. Information is available at 792-1085.

The New York State Thruway Authority operates the New York State Canal System that has a spur from the Hudson River in Fort Edward to Lake Champlain in Whitehall, N.Y. The Hudson River is navigable from Fort Edward to the Atlantic Ocean at New York City. Lake Champlain, the northern end of the canal can be navigated to the St. Lawrence Seaway going east to the ocean or west to Lake Erie. At Albany, on the Hudson River, the Erie Canal goes west to Lake Erie. The locks along the canal have become home to many tourists traveling by boat to various destinations. Lock 6 in Fort Miller and Lock 7, located at the southern edge of the village, allows local residents to view the passage of these boats through the system.

FORT HUDSON HEALTH SERVICES
The Fort Hudson Health Services is a not-for-profit corporation that has been serving the health care needs of our community since 1969. The campus incorporates 162 skilled nursing beds (Medicare/Medicaid Certified), including a state of the art special Alzheimer's/Dementia unit, respite care, on Adult Day Health Care program and a 32 bed Adult Care facility.

EMPLOYMENT
There are several industries and manufacturers in the Town of Fort Edward. Fort Edward has two industrial parks with several large and small industries located in each. The Town is also home to the Washington County Office Building housing nearly all the county offices and support groups.
